Sept 22

We talked a bit about text books. I have been to Borders and there are a number of beginners books available but apart from Japanese for Busy People (which we are tired of) there is nothing much for this level of ability. I have decided to try some materials which are produced by the Japan Foundation called Chikara. Information can be found here http://www.jpf.org.uk/language/teaching_chikara.php These materials are freely available online, aimed at school children studying for GCSE so I will try to adapt things accordingly, just using the materials as a base in which to build our lessons. There is an option to order hard copies of the materials (even though they are free online) and also a CD of the conversations. We'll see how we get on with this over the next week or two before we do anything drastic.

This week and next week's topic will be hobbies, we will cover hobbies, adjectives ( + negative adjectives) and comparing things, saying what we like/dislike and what we are good at/ not good at etc. To find the materials go to http://www.jpf.org.uk/language/exercises/list.php and download M-6. If your computer is fast you can select all the materials (which includes sound files and little games) . If your computer is slow, just select M6ex1, M6ex2 and M6text, these are PDF files.

The other book that I thought we could use is Teach Yourself Beginners Japanese Script (2003 ed) Helen Gilhooly. We will use this to review hiragana and katakana and then to introduce a few kanji. Please try to get hold of a copy (I got mine in Borders).
